The airport

Bratislava Airport in brief

M. R. Štefánik Airport (BTS) is Slovakia’s biggest international airport, on the north-eastern edge of Bratislava, 9 km from the centre, with its own link to the D1 by-pass — the motorway on to Trnava, Trenčín and Žilina — so a northbound coach never crosses the city.

It is a low-cost airport: Ryanair, Wizz Air and Smartwings base aircraft here, and it serves as the low-cost alternative to Vienna for a four-country catchment. Ryanair covers the UK, Italy and Spain — London Stansted, Manchester, Edinburgh; Milan, Rome, Naples, Palermo; Barcelona, Málaga, Alicante — and Wizz Air adds London Luton, Berlin, Dortmund, Basel, Oslo and Rome; London and Manchester were among the five busiest routes in 2024. There is no scheduled long-haul — intercontinental flights are seasonal holiday charters only.

Scale: 2.44 million passengers in 2025, the airport’s record year and 25% up on 2024, helped by Ryanair and Wizz Air shifting capacity from Vienna to Bratislava, where there is no aviation tax.

Group handling

Handling a group at BTS

One terminal complex: the 2012 main building (A), with check-in and the arrivals hall on the ground floor, plus the adjoining Terminal B for non-Schengen arrivals and departures — UK flights included. Name-board meet & greet waits at the arrivals exit; the coach is a few metres away on the drive-through road in front of the terminal, free for 15 minutes of loading, with the P TRANZIT lane for buses re-entering within the hour. The airport publishes no separate coach park. From touchdown to the Old Town, count about 20 minutes by coach.

From the terminal: Piešťany 75 km up the D1; Banská Štiavnica about 170 km via the D1 and R1, Kremnica about 175 km — about two hours by coach; Žilina about 170 km and two hours up the D1, Terchová 25 km further. Departures: the airport asks for two hours before the flight, so the outbound coach is timed to that.

When to choose it over Vienna: when the group’s origin is on the Ryanair or Wizz Air map — the low-cost seats sit here. For long-haul and network carriers, land at Vienna, about 45 minutes west by the A6 and A4: the natural open-jaw partner. We routinely plan arrivals into one and departures from the other, our coach and private transfers covering both at net rates.
