Orava — the most authentic corner of Slovakia
Hard against the Polish border in the north, Orava is the region Slovaks themselves call the most authentic — conservative, folkloric and crowned by Orava Castle, the 13th-century eyrie on a 112-metre rock where the 1922 Nosferatu was filmed.
Wooden churches, the open-air village museum at Zuberec and raft trips on the Orava river fill the days around the castle; groups usually enter from Kraków or pair Orava with the Malá Fatra next door.
