Variety of Slovak Wines
- Gruner Veltliner/ Zelený Veltlín – is a fundamental and key variety in the Little Carpathian Wine Region. The wine is fresh with a subtle fruity flavour. It has a higher acidity and good potential for long archiving.
- Neuburg – a white variety is widespread especially around Bratislava and Pezinok. It makes fine wine.
- Devín – the variety emerged in 1958 by crossing Red Traminer with Red and White Veltliner in Bratislava. It has spicy aromas of Traminer and nutmeg.
- Lemberger/ Frankovka Modrá – with ruby colour and the taste of cinnamon it is the most characteristic Slovak red wine.
- St. Laurent/ Svätovavrinecké – is a typical red variety with intense colour and higher acidity, the scent of which resembles prunes.
- Danube/ Dunaj – red variety achieved by triple crossing in Bratislava. It is only grown in Slovakia and marginally also in the Czech republic.
- Cabernet sauvignon – red variety originally from France is increasingly acquiring popularity. Its characteristic scent is that of black currants
- Devin Currant Wine / Devínsky Ribezliak – a unique sweet currant wine typical of the Bratislava district of Devín, made from black currants.
The rising star – Slovak Rose Wine
Due to global warming and the unique hillside vineyards of the Small Carpathian Wine Route, Slovak rosé wines have been improving in quality year after year, gaining increasing popularity. The combination of climate and terroir creates fresh, elegant, and well-balanced rosés that stand out on the international stage.
We have welcomed clients from Italy and Spain who were pleasantly surprised—many even claiming that Slovak rosé rivals or surpasses wines from their home countries.
Slovak rosé is especially delightful in summer, perfectly complementing light meals, fresh salads, and delicate desserts, making it an ideal choice for warm, sunny days.

FAQ: Wine Tour Slovakia
Absolutely not. Some of our favourite guests on this tour were complete beginners who just liked the idea of beautiful countryside and good food. The sommeliers explain everything in plain language — no pretension, no jargon. You’ll leave knowing more than you expected, and you’ll have enjoyed every sip getting there.
A lot. Over the five days you’ll taste more than 40 wines across wineries, cellars, restaurants and the National Saloon of Wines in Bratislava. We pace it sensibly — this is a wine journey, not a pub crawl.
Both, genuinely. Day one alone covers Bratislava Castle, the historic Old Town, St. Martin’s Cathedral and more. You’ll also visit a medieval rotunda in Skalica, a 9th-century castle in Nitra, the so-called “Rome of Slovakia” in Trnava, and the dramatic ruins of Devín Castle on the Austrian border. The wine is the thread that connects it all.
We pick you up at Vienna Airport on arrival and drop you back there on departure. So you don’t need a separate transfer from Vienna — it’s all taken care of from the moment you land. We can also adjust the tour to pick up at Bratislava Airport.
September and October are magical — the harvest is underway, the hills turn golden and the wineries are buzzing with activity. That said, the tour runs year-round and each season has its own character. Spring brings blossom on the vines, summer is warm and relaxed, and winter has a quieter, more intimate feel with mulled wine and firelit cellars.
